  • The first ever World Series was played between the Boston Americans (later the Red Sox) and the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1903. The format of the series was a best-of-nine; two more games than the current format of best-of-seven.
  • The World Series was not played in 1904. Owner John T. Brush of the New York Giants refused to allow his team to play citing inconsistent standards for postseason play, and proposed a set of rules that would later be called the "Brush Rules."
  • The only other year a World Series was not played was after the 1994 regular season which was due to an ongoing player strike.
  • Eight players, including “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, were expelled from the game on a permanent basis due to their involvement in fixing the 1919 series.
  • In 1989, an earthquake shook the opening game in San Fransisco between the San Franciso Giants and Oakland A's.
