The Breeders’ Cup World Championships has become recognized as the ultimate test of a Thoroughbred’s talent and ability in this powerful year-end championship. The Breeders’ Cup brings the world of horse racing together as the best of each class come together for two days of racing.
Through the enthusiastic participation of prominent horsemen from around the world who bring their top horses to compete, the Breeders’ Cup has established a reputation for showcasing Thoroughbred racing at the highest level of international competition.
• The 2011 series featured 51 Group 1, American Grade I or Canadian Grade 1 races, an increase of 15 Grade I or Group 1 events over last year.
• Breeders’ Cup is offering a special one-time “Open Enrollment” program this year. The Open Enrollment program, which ends on June 30, is available to any non-nominated horse anywhere in the world as long as the sire is Breeders’ Cup nominated in 2011.
• Total purses for this year’s two-day event at Churchill Downs, Nov. 4-5, are $26 million.
• The 2010 Breeders’ Cup delivered nearly $140 million in winning wagers to fans at betting locations around the globe.
• Since the inaugural running at Hollywood Park 27 years ago, the Breeders’ Cup has established itself as the season-ending championship of thoroughbred racing.
• In 1984, Alain de Royer-Dupre saddled the Aga Khan’s Lashkari to win the first Breeders’ Cup Turf.
