2016 Barrett-Jackson: Things You Have to Do While in Scottsdale

By Jaime Villegas

Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale is about a month and a half away! Are you ready to be a part of The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auction™? The mecca for auto auctions is taking over Westworld of Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona, but Westworld isn’t the only place you can explore while you’re there. Add to your vacation by arriving a few days before or extend your trip and experience all that Scottsdale has to offer.

With the incredibly gorgeous and breath-taking McDowell Mountains as a backdrop for your experience, cars won’t be the only thing you’ll ogle after! From the moment the sun rises over the Sonoran Desert until long after it sets, Scottsdale offers exciting options for things to see and do. From outdoor adventures and championship golf to upscale shopping and spa treatments, Scottsdale days can be as active or relaxed as you’d like. And after dark, every hour is happy hour, especially in downtown where more than 80 restaurants, clubs and lounges await.

Here’s our list of the things you HAVE to do while in Scottsdale!

Hot Air Balloon Tours

You’ll have to get up early for this one (most flights depart at sunrise), but the spectacular views will make it all worthwhile. As your balloon lifts off, you’ll fly low enough to see desert critters scurrying about below. Then, as you gain altitude you’ll get amazing 360-degree views of the Valley of the Sun and the surrounding mountain ranges. These rides will take your breath away!

Off-Roading Desert Tours

If you prefer to take in your outdoor action from the comfort of staying on land, try one (or more) of the MANY options the Sonoran Desert offers. The best part, you get to choose what adventure you have! Get a taste of the Old West on a classic Jeep tour with an entertaining cowboy guide. Go high-tech on a night-vision Hummer tour. And if you’d rather do the driving yourself, Tomcar and C2 tours put you behind the wheel to traverse the desert’s rugged, scenic trails.

Not Your Daddy’s Golf Game

Scottsdale courses are putting a hip, young spin on the traditional game with cool offerings such as the Scottish Golf Experience at Kierland Golf Club. To honor Scottish immigrants who helped develop Arizona and make the game truly authentic, don rented kilts and enjoy Johnnie Walker libations while perfecting your swing. Tell me this doesn’t sound like a lot of fun! I hear Grayhawk Golf Club also incorporates some music into their rounds on the practice range.

Horseback Riding

For those who want to get in touch with their inner cowboy (or cowgirl), Scottsdale offers horseback riding across the same terrain that hosted such legendary figures as Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid and renowned Apache Warrior, Geronimo. These guided adventures can even take you through the cool waters of the Verde River.

Hiking & Climbing

Scottsdale offers nearly 100 miles of hiking, biking and horseback-riding trails. Some of the most popular spots include Camelback Mountain and Pinnacle Peak Park, but nothing beats the picturesque expanses of Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, which offers nearly 200,000 acres to enjoy do-it-yourself or guided (recommended unless you are VERY experienced) outdoor adventures.

Seaplane Explorin’

Hop aboard a nine-passenger Cessna Caravan seaplane and cruise over some of Scottsdale area’s most amazing sights, including the McDowell Mountains, Salt River Canyons, Native American cliff dwellings, Apache Trail and Weaver’s Needle. You’ll also fly over several area lakes and make a water landing on Roosevelt Lake! For a real treat for that special someone, add an elegant Sunday brunch on the shores of Roosevelt Lake catered by Scottsdale’s award-winning FnB Restaurant.

Water Sports

First-time visitors might be surprised by the number of wet n’ wild adventures available in and around Scottsdale. The city’s outskirts are abundant with lakes, watering holes and rivers. Rafting, tubing and fishing are all available to visitors who want to explore Scottsdale’s desert.

Drinks That’ll Lift Your Spirits

Ready for a night on the town? Scottsdale’s got you covered with exciting nightlife options that run the gamut from Western saloons and upscale cocktail lounges to high-energy dance clubs. Check out these local favorites!

What better way to unwind from all the excitement then to relax at the spa! These spa experiences are anything but ordinary. In fact, they’re among the best in town. And when you’re the world’s finest resort spa destination, that’s saying something!
