March 6, 2014

2014 is the year of change for college football! We’ve watched as the College Football Playoff has replaced the BCS series, which means we’re now watching as humans replace computers and formulas!

So who are these 13 people that are replacing the system of the BCS? They’re called the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.

They’re people that come from all different backgrounds with a vast amount of football knowledge and who are known for their high integrity. After all, with this Selection Committee coming to be known as one of the hardest jobs in sports, ethical and informed decisions on their part are key to the success of the College Football Playoff.

But don’t think that the Selection Committee was chosen for their three-year term without an in-depth look into their backgrounds with college football. Each committee member has had various experiences within the college football community, ranging from coaches, athletes, journalists and university leaders.

How the Selection Committee Decides Who Goes to the College Football Playoff

There are many factors that come into play for the Selection Committee to decide which teams are College Football Playoff worthy. The committee will consider head-to-head results, strength of schedule, win-loss records, conference championships and they will compare results against common opponents.

The Selection Committee will also watch vast amounts of game video to review and examine different elements that are relevant to the decision.

So what happens when a team that a Selection Committee member represents is brought into discussion? To keep the process impartial, that committee member will not be involved in that discussion.

Worried about not knowing where your team stands until the end of the season? Don’t fret! The Selection Committee will prepare interim rankings throughout the regular season so that coaches, teams and fans can have an idea of what position their team holds in the rank.
